Welcome back to The Little Island🏝️, a clod of dirt in an imaginary ocean where I go to write songs, draw, and dream up wacky tales for my kids’ bedtime stories. In this edition, we kick off the story of Little Bear, which I am publishing here on Substack in illustrated installments. I hope you enjoy the story’s opening pages!

Shhh...
May I kindly ask you to lower your voice?
In just a minute, Little Bear will wake up with an appetite as big as a hook-and-ladder fire truck.
If you listen closely, you might just be able to hear the funny way Little Bear snores when he is hungry.
“Ahhhnkhoo... Ahhhnkhoo...”

Little Bear will also wake to find some uninvited guests in his backyard.
Not just the usual wildflowers and weeds and field mice outside his home — but two strange human creatures called “campers”.
Both Little Bear and the campers are about to have a very interesting morning. Although everyone will wake up hungry, there is only one breakfast to go around.
Who do you think will get to it first?
Simple and beautiful, always.
